two minutes to midnight on the 31st of December 2009. A mark in the sands of the Sahara.

By marking the first decade of the millennium, which ended in 2009, we also reference the turn of the millennium itself. It also marked a crucial turning point in my own life and the complexities for moving back home to Harare after a year in Cape Town. By coincidence the second decade of the millennium – ending December 2019 – ended up affecting the whole world via the unforeseen pandemic Covid-19/coronavirus which references that same year.

I am furthermore influenced by global response via Taylor Swift’s recently released album Midnights of October 2022 – a wonderful coda indeed and a well overdue popularization of “midnights” as a meme and metaphor.
